TBH, the Secrets name seemed a little . . . suspect to me before I visited one of their resorts. What kinds of secrets do these people have, anyway? Come to find out, Secrets resorts offer tame fun in amazing tropical locations. Now part of the Hyatt family along with sister family-friendly brand Dreams, it’s one of the world’s leading adults-only all-inclusive brands, competing with Sandals. I’ve now stayed at six of their properties, most recently at the spectacular Secrets Maroma in Mexico’s Riviera Maya.
And it was a stay to remember, with delicious food, a huge room, even in the lead-in category, lots of activities if you want, or none at all if you don’t. Many resorts are for pool OR beach people. Secrets Maroma has both: the beach at Maroma is wide, with soft, white sand—while the beautiful pool winds through one end of the resort, providing both quiet and active areas for guests.
I spent my days by the pool with a frozen drink, or in it playing volleyball, with breaks for meals. Don’t love a buffet? You don’t have to, as there are multiple restaurants covering French, Italian, Asian, and Mexican food groups. There are shows or activities at night if you want for entertaining.
I did (briefly) leave the poolside for a private excursion with my preferred company in Mexico (with whom I book all of my MX clients). They’re local, only do private or very small group outings, and offer the best guides in the region. On our day trip, my driver-guide took me to explore the Sian Ka’an biosphere with its natural lazy river, and the Muyil Mayan ruins. It was a full and fun day—and they offer trips to cenotes, other ruins, wildlife sanctuaries, etc. Top notch. Ask me for details.

Ready for some sunshine, pool or beach time, alcohol, and adult fun? I offer for your consideration one of three Secrets resorts in Cancun/Riviera Maya:
Secrets Maroma is a classic with a great beach, great food, and great pools.
Secrets Akumal is further south, also terrific, and has a more tropical feel—as well as sea turtles and snorkeling. It’s also home to some of my favorite pools in the region.
And Secrets Playa Blanca is a brand new gem on the coast north of Cancun with fresh design and a protected beach. Haven’t visited this one yet, but I will.
Shoot me an email to discuss these and other options in nice warm locations in preparation for our next ice storm—beau@rediscovereurope.com. It’s a quick flight from DFW.
